AVERAGE COST OF A WEDDING IN NEW ENGLAND

Within every single region and state (& even city to city) the average cost of a wedding is different and varies greatly. There are multiple factors that truly affect budget:

  • Number of Guests
  • Location
  • Season
  • Day of the Week (i.e Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
  • Food & Beverage
  • Reputable Vendors
  • Upgraded Rentals
  • Fine Details and Custom Décor

WHAT FACTORS EFFECT BUDGET?

WEDDING BUDGET NEW ENGLAND

First things first, everything you read online for a wedding budget is misleading. All online wedding publications provide an average cost for a wedding but they do not provide what went into those numbers. They do not take into account location, guest count, time of year and the list goes on and on. It leaves couples confused, in sticker shock, and absolutely no idea where and how to invest in their wedding.

The following will help you create a realistic wedding budget for a New England wedding.

These are just averages, you can have a wedding that costs less — so many beautiful celebrations can take place at a lower price ranges. This is just the averages I have seen in my experience.

Average Wedding Cost by States
(to host a private home/tented wedding, luxury venue (mansion, historical venue, hotel), in season, incorporating elevated details and elements (custom stationary, specialty linens, floral installations, etc.)

First, I cannot stress this enough, decide your TOP priorities. What matters to you? Are photographs, flowers and food the most important to you? OR is the venue and location more important? You have to decide your top three priorities before deciding on a budget.

Next, creating a budget is best by percentages for each vendor category. BUT percentages vary largely for Catering, Beverage, Venue, Florist, Stationary and Transportation based on guest count, location, type of food service (plated v. buffet), etc. The remaining categories are pretty stagnant no matter the season, guest count, location, etc.

Applying vendor percentages for each vendor category to determine how much to allocate towards each vendor. Some vendor categories have percentage ranges because some vendors will take priority over others

Vendor Category Percentages:
  • Catering and Beverage: 30-40%
  • Venue (including ceremony space): 10-20%
  • Wedding Planner: 10%
  • Officiant: 1%
  • Photographer: 8-10%
  • Entertainment (including ceremony music): if Band: 7-10% or if DJ: 2-5%
  • Florist: 10-15%
  • Rentals and Decor: 8-15%
  • Video: 5-6%
  • Attire: 5%
  • Wedding Stationery: 3-5%
  • Hair and Makeup: 1-2%
  • Transportation: 2-3%
  • Cake/Dessert: 1-2%

CREATE A BUDGET
FOR EACH VENDOR CATEGORY

In my experience, the average cost of a wedding in New England in 2023 and beyond, for 150 guests in peak season (May through October) who have hired a team of professional and seasoned vendors is $152,500.

Here is a typical breakdown, in my experience, for standard costs:

  • Venue Fee: $14,000
  • Catering and Beverage (Plated Dinner & Open Bar): $55,000
  • Photographer: $8,500
  • Videographer: $6,000
  • Hair and Makeup for 8 Attendants including the bride: $4,000
  • Florist: $15,000 (no floral installations)
  • Transportation: $7,000
  • Band: $14,000 or DJ: $3,000
  • Stationary (Save the Dates, Invitations, Day of Stationary): $8,000
  • Rentals and Décor: $15,000
  • Attire: $6,000

With all of that said, you can find amazing vendors who are at the start of the career who will do an amazing job!! You are able to find that gem of a venue that has more reasonable venue fees and catering. You can opt to have a buffet over plated. Instead of motor coaches, you offer school buses. There are MULTIPLE ways to have a wedding, create a budget, this is just my experience of planning weddings for my couples.
